The Montevallo Día de Muertos Festival is a free Day of the Dead celebration held every fall in the Pecan Grove at Orr Park in Montevallo, Alabama. The 2026 festival, our fourth, is Sunday, November 1, from 2:00 to 9:00 PM. More than 3,000 people came in 2025, from Montevallo and from across Shelby County.

Día de Muertos is not Halloween, and it is not a sad day. It is the day families set a place for the people they have lost: a photograph, the food they loved, a candle to help them find the way home. In Montevallo that happens under the pecan trees. Altars go up along the grove, there is music on the stage and food from local kitchens, faces get painted as Catrinas, and once the sun is down there are lights in the branches.
El Día de Muertos no es Halloween, y no es un día triste. Es el día en que las familias apartan un lugar para quienes ya no están: una fotografía, la comida que amaban, una vela para ayudarles a encontrar el camino a casa. En Montevallo eso ocurre bajo los nogales. The festival runs seven hours and it is a different event by the end of it. Come early for the altars and the children's activities while it is still light. Come back for the evening, or just stay, once the lights are on and the stage fills up.

An ofrenda is an altar built for someone who has died. Families and community groups set them up along the grove, and anyone walking through is welcome to stop, leave a marigold, and say a name out loud.

Space in the grove is limited and altars are placed in advance, so register before the day. Set-up runs from 8 AM to 1 PM on November 1, and everything needs to be finished by 2 PM when the grove opens.

La Catrina, the elegant skeleton in the big hat, started out as satire and became the face of the holiday. Every year Montevallo fills up with them. The contest is free to enter and open to everyone, kids included.

Food trucks, artists and makers are all welcome. There are three applications — one for food, one for makers and goods, and one for non-profit organizations. Food and makers booths carry a participation fee that the form explains; non-profit booths are free. Spaces are limited, so apply early.

Set-up, welcome tables, children's activities, altar support, clean-up. You can take a shift and still get the festival. Most volunteers work two or three hours and spend the rest of the evening in the grove.

Yes, and you are welcome to. Bring a printed photograph and a marigold and leave them at the community altar. If you want to build a full altar of your own, register it with the committee ahead of the festival so a space can be saved for you.
